With lumber a board foot is calculated by:

multiplying THICKNES X WIDTH X LENGTH divided by 144 = BOARD FEET

(THICKNESS, WIDTH & LENGTH measurements are in inches)

DOYLE LOG RULE

for estimating board feet in a log

Length of log in feet

Text Box: Diameter of SMALLEST end of log measured inside the bark in inches
Text Box: Common lumber thickness & width in inches

Length of lumber in feet

LUMBER SCALE

for calculating board feet in lumber

*The DOYLE LOG RULE is a rough estimate of the board feet that a log may yield.

Bandsaw mills are able to recover many more board feet per log due to the thin blade profile that removes less waste in the form of sawdust.

Other factors that effect the actual

board feet a log will produce:

Branches or Limbs along the length of the log

Rotten spots or hollow logs

Foreign material imbedded in the log

Size of lumber the customer desires from the log
